All services are free and confidential:
pregnancy tests; accurate information on pregnancy, abortion procedures/risks,
parenting, and adoption; help in preparing for pregnancy, childbirth, and parenting; maternity and baby clothing, baby furniture;
referrals for adoption services; guidance regarding school and employment; referrals for medical care, social services, and other community resources; ongoing emotional support; and post-abortion counseling.

Baby-Love Medicaid and Maternity Care Coordination:
This program provides voluntary services to women on Medicaid during and after pregnancy. Medicaid eligible pregnant women in Watauga County can participate. Information about Medicaid, medical benefits, prenatal care, WIC services, transportation, information about your pregnancy, and information about other available services is provided.
*General Clinic is on Tuesday mornings and one Thursday per month. Health Department will administer a pregnancy test. A woman with a positive pregnancy test receives a signed paper to then go to Social Services and apply for Medicaid. If the woman is eligible for Medicaid, then she is eligible for Baby Love and Maternity Care Coordination (private patient or patient at health department).
NC Health Check/Health Choice For Children:
free or low cost health insurance to children whose families cannot pay for private insurance and who do not qualify for Medicaid. Applications are available at the Health Department (264-6635) or Social Services (265-8100).

Public assistance programs:
Work First: assistance with daycare while working or attending school
Subsidized Child Care: subsidy dollars may be available to help cover child care costs for individuals who need child care and meet required income eligibility limits. (For a list of child care providers please contact the Children’s Council Child Care Resource and Referral at 262-5424.)
Medicaid: medical assistance for prenatal and hospital visits during pregnancy.
Other programs: Health Choice, special assistance, energy assistance, emergency assistance, food stamps.
Other services: Provide services of adoption, foster care, protective services (adults and children), medical transportation, family planning, and work permits for minors.

For medicaid payment, pregnancy must be considered high-risk. Services also available through private payment. Licensed home care agency providing in-home aide services in Avery, Mitchell, Yancey, Burke, McDowell, and Watauga counties. Provides in-home aides to do personal care, housekeeping, and assistance with grocery and drug store errands.

WeCAN – Watauga Crisis Assistance Network:
In order to receive financial assistance, the individual or family must have an emergency need. Verification of the emergency need is required.
WeCAN sees clients Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 9 a.m.-11 a.m. at the Hospitality House at 302 W. King Street, Boone. Call the Hospitality House at 264-1237 and ask for the WeCan Program.

This class offers a complete instructional guide to proper car seat use. Offers help obtaining a car seat.

La Leche League:
A support group for breastfeeding mothers. Nursing mothers, babies, and pregnant women are invited to attend.
